Highland Cow Experience in the Scottish Borders – Meet Our Highland Cows

Why We Love Our ‘Coos’

Before we talk about our Highland cow experience in the Scottish Borders it’s probably important to say this: we genuinely love our coos!

They’re not just a photo opportunity or something we “put on” for visitors. They’re part of the farm, part of our daily life, and part of our story.

Highland cows have such quiet character. They’re steady and calm, curious without being demanding (qualities appreciated by this hectic family!) Some will wander over to see what’s going on. Others prefer to hang back, fringe blowing in the wind, looking entirely unbothered by the world.

Over the years, we’ve got to know their personalities – the confident ones, the gentle ones, the ones who always seem to stand perfectly for photos (as if they know). There’s something very grounding about being out in the field with them. No rush. No noise. Just fresh Borders air and these iconic, shaggy creatures moving slowly through the grass.

That’s why we created the Highland Cow Experience in the first place.

Not because they’re trendy (even though they are!)
Not because they photograph well (even though they do!)
But because we wanted to share that feeling with you.

If you want to know more about them before you come check out this great article sharing 14 facts about Heilan Coo’s from Visit Inverness.

What Makes Our Highland Cow Experience Different?

If you’re looking for a Highland Cow Experience in Scotland, and want more than just a quick photo over a gate, you’re in the right place.

Our Highland Cow Experience takes place in the heart of the Scottish Borders countryside, near Jedburgh, just one hour from Edinburgh and Newcastle. It’s a guided, close-up encounter with one of Scotland’s most iconic and beloved animals, set against rolling hills and open skies.

This isn’t a busy attraction or a rushed stop. It’s a relaxed, personal experience on a real working farm.

When people search for “Highland cow experience near me” or “things to do in the Scottish Borders,” they’re often hoping for something memorable.

Our experience begins with a scenic trailer ride through the fields, taking in the views before heading out to meet our friendly fold of Highland cows in their natural setting.

You’ll spend approximately one hour in a guided session, getting properly close, taking photographs, learning about the breed, and simply enjoying the calm atmosphere. Highland cows are naturally inquisitive and used to visitors, which makes the encounter feel genuine and unforced.

For safety reasons, visitors don’t pet or feed the cows, but you’ll be close enough to appreciate their size, their character and, of course, that unmistakable shaggy fringe!

After your highland cow experience your ticket includes full access to the rest of the farm, so you’re welcome to explore at your own pace, wander through the visitor paddocks, and relax with a tea, coffee or ice cream in the farmyard.

It’s not just about seeing Highland cows, although that may be the best bit – It’s about experiencing the Scottish countryside properly.

Practical Details Before You Visit

The experience is family-friendly, though children must be supervised at all times. Sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are essential, as farm areas can (will likely) be muddy!

Our tour trailer is fully accessible, and we aim to make the experience inclusive wherever possible. If you require assistance, please contact us in advance and we’d be happy to help.

Hand hygiene is essential to protect both visitors and livestock. After the experience, all visitors must wash their hands thoroughly. Shoe covers are provided, but clean hands remain the most effective defence against contamination.

Dogs are not permitted on the experience, in livestock areas or on the circular walk, but they are welcome on a lead in the car park and picnic bench area outside the attraction.
